Agusto & Co hereby assigns “A-” (long-term) and “A1” (short-term) ratings to Golden Fertilizer Company Limited (“Golden Fertilizer”, “GFCL” or “the Company”). The assigned ratings reflect the Company’s good profitability despite recent input cost pressures and demand-side price sensitivities within the fertilizer market, which continue to restrict full cost pass-through. The ratings also consider Golden Fertilizer’s market leadership and strong brand equity, underpinned by its membership of the Flour Mills Group, which support its pricing ability. However, the ratings are constrained by GFCL’s inadequate working capital, high leverage and its considerable exposure to foreign exchange risk, stemming from reliance on imported raw materials amid minimal backward integration. In addition, competitive pressures within the fertilizer blending industry and potential threats from upstream raw-material producers further weigh on the ratings.
Golden Fertilizer was incorporated in 1997 and initially operated as an importer of finished fertilizers before transitioning to domestic blending. The Company is engaged in the production and distribution of fertilizers, as well as the importation and sale of hybrid seeds and agrochemicals, with fertilizer accounting for 99.9% of its operations. GFCL has expanded from an initial installed blending capacity of 470,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTpa) in Lagos to a multi-plant production footprint across Nigeria, with a combined installed capacity of approximately 1.094 million MTpa across five blending facilities. The Company’s product portfolio comprises a range of NPK and nitrogen-based fertilizer formulations tailored to different soil and crop requirements, alongside customised blends produced for corporate clients. The Company operates within the agro-allied segment of its ultimate parent, Flour Mills of Nigeria Group.
